Sheffield United is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Billy Russell, aged 87.

United boss Joe Mercer moved to sign Billy in August 1957 from Rhyl, signing initially as an amateur. Billy had also enjoyed a short stint with Bishop Auckland and played and scored in the Amateur Cup Final that year.

He netted on his United debut in a Division Two (now Championship) game against Charlton in a 3-1 defeat. Two days later he scored both goals in a 2-2 draw against Lincoln.

Billy had been studying to become a teacher and whilst playing part-time for the Blades he was also holding down a job in a secondary school.

During his stint with United, he was a regular goalscorer. His fast and direct style saw him break forward quickly from midfield, and this aligned with a keen eye for goal ensured he was a key component in the side until injury struck during the 1959-60 season. He missed much of this season with a broken leg but returned to the side with great effect in the following campaign as United earned promotion to Division One and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup. During this successful season he enjoyed a run of scoring 11 goals in 10 games, whilst in the sixth round of the cup he scored a hat-trick in the first 18 minutes at Newcastle.

Billy did enjoy some success with United in Division One before departing for Bolton Wanderers in 1963. He ended his career with spells at Rochdale, Scarborough and Chorley.

During his spell with United he made 175 appearances in all competitions, scoring 75 goals. Billy also won four amateur England caps whilst with the Blades. He is pictured playing at Bramall Lane against Chelsea in January 1962.

The condolences of all at the club go out to Billy's family at this sad time.
