Sheffield United is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Barry Wagstaff, aged 78.

One of a clutch of young talented players who burst onto the scene during the 1960s, Barry starred for the Blades alongside his brother, Tony, after being discovered by scout Archie Clark.

Barry, who was a year younger than Tony, made his senior debut for the Blades in 1964, in the same game as Alan Woodward, as United lost 3-1 to Liverpool in a Division One fixture.

During the 1965/66 season, Barry became a regular as United finished ninth in Division One and he was again a mainstay in 1966/67 as John Harris's side finished tenth.

Playing mainly at left half, he was also adept at filling in on the right and occasionally at inside forward or centre half.

When Arthur Rowley became United boss in 1968, Barry lost his place and departed for Reading, alongside Tony in 1969.

Overall, Barry made 138 appearances in all competitions and scored five goals whilst at Bramall Lane. He and Tony played together on more occasions than any other United brothers.

Following his stint at Reading, Barry returned to South Yorkshire playing for Rotherham between 1975 and 1977, ending his career in non-league. He later moved into coaching with Barnsley.

The condolences of all at the club go out to Barry's wife, Sue, family and friends at this sad time.
