Player Info
Chris Wilder returned as manager of the Blades in early December 2023, signing a deal until the summer of 2025.
Sheffield-born, his association with United started from the terraces as a fan before he became a player, making his senior debut in 1986. He played a major role in the United side which earned back-to-back promotions from the Third Division to the First Division between 1988 and 1990 whilst also starring in the top flight.
His playing career took in spells at Rotherham, Notts County and Bradford City before he returned for a second playing spell at the Lane between 1998 and 1999.
After ending his playing days in 2001, he started his managerial story in non-league at Alfreton Town. Winning four trophies in 2001/02, which included the Northern Counties East Football League Premier Division, his success earned him the top job at Halifax Town.
After six years at The Shay, he joined Oxford United earning promotion from the Conference Premier via the play-offs in 2010.
His next stop in 2014 was Sixfields, where under difficult financial circumstances, he guided Northampton Town to promotion from League Two in 2016.
Arriving at Bramall Lane as a manager for the first time in May 2016, he ended six long years in the third tier by taking United to the League One title in his first season, securing a club record 100 points in the process.
In 2019 he earned promotion number two, steering United back to the Premier League for the first time in 12 years. His achievement saw him pick up the prestigious LMA Manager of the Year award.
There was more success to follow, with the Blades on the brink of a European place before the season was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. United still finished in a hugely impressive ninth position.
Chris left the Blades in March 2021 and would go on to have spells in charge of Middlesbrough and Watford.
Following the departure of Paul Heckingbottom, fan favourite Chris was re-appointed as Blades boss, starting his second stint in the Bramall Lane dugout with a home game against Liverpool.
