Sheffield United is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Derek Hawksworth.
Bradford-born Derek signed for the Blades from the Bantams in December 1950 and went on to make 286 appearances for the Blades, scoring 103 goals as well as playing a major part in securing the League Division Two Championship title at the end of the 1952/53 season.
He and Alf Ringstead formed a formidable reputation as two of the most dangerous pairs of wingers in United history, although, over the course of his time with the Club, Derek played in all of the forward positions, although his favoured role was on the left.
He was selected for the FA against the army in November 1951 and also was selected for England B, playing against France in May 1952. He eventually left for Huddersfield Town in 1958 and followed with spells at Lincoln City and finally Bradford again before retiring from the game.
He was a fine servant to the Club and a great ambassador for the game of football in general. All at Sheffield United send their deepest condolences to the family for their sad loss, and mourn a player who contributed so much to the story of the Blades.
